Layer height affects visible detail, print time, geometry, strength, and reliability—it is not simply a quality setting.

What changes with layer height?

Thinner Layers

More detail, more time

Curves, gentle slopes, text, and small upright details may look smoother. More layers increase print time and create more opportunities for an error.

Thicker Layers

Faster, but with less fine detail

Using fewer layers can shorten the print. Layer lines may be easier to see, small details may soften, and overhangs or top surfaces may print differently.

Other Settings Still Matter

Review the complete print profile

Layer height changes the shape and bonding of each extruded line. Print orientation, nozzle temperature, flow ratio, cooling, top thickness, and nozzle size still affect the result.

Compare Before Printing

Change one setting at a time

Keep the printer, filament, and orientation the same. Compare estimated time, small details, overhangs, top surfaces, and required filament flow. Test print when the effect is uncertain.

Unsupported Features

Overhangs and bridges

Thinner layers can reduce how far each new line extends beyond the layer below, but cooling, speed, filament type, and geometry still matter.

Build-Plate Helpers

Brims, skirts, and rafts

These features are separate from the model’s normal layers. Review their own height, spacing, and removal settings after changing the print profile.

Cute Dragon exampleIK3D recommends layers of 0.16 mm or thinner. The Snapmaker listing shows 0.20 mm, while the checked U1 project uses 0.22 mm and a 0.25 mm first layer. The creator also warns that making the 60 mm model smaller can reduce detail, so model size and layer height should be considered together.
